Holiday Food Drive

The KC (kindness and compassion) Club is organizing a Food Drive from November 5th - November 16th at Arrowhead School. This is not a competition between classes, just simply a way to help the community as we enter into the Holiday season. Please encourage your students to bring an item to donate to the Billings Food Bank. Food items can be placed in the buckets/tubs by the front office.

Friday the 26th a busy day!

We will begin our day on October 26 in the classroom wearing our favorite sports team attire to finish Red Ribbon Week. We will then attend the performance of "Great Mountain" at Alberta Bair Theater. We will be leaving right before lunch. If possible, please have your child pack a cold lunch to eat in the classroom for quick departure at 11:50. This performance is a district-provided field trip for all Billings 4th graders. The evening will be completed with the Halloween Family Fun Night here at Arrowhead School. Students can come dressed in their costumes for a fun night of games and treats.

We will have October Spirit Day on October 31st. All students encouraged to wear black and orange. No costumes will be worn to school on Halloween Day. A $1.00 donation for Spirit Day will support our ongoing fund for technology at Arrowhead School.

Donuts for Dads

Please join us for Donuts for Dads on Thursday, October 25th. All male family members are invited to this yummy event. When finished with their donut, students will go outside to the walking circle and wait for the 8:15 bell to ring.

Conferences

Conference slips came home on Wednesday 10/17/12. I scheduled as best as I could to parent preferences. Please let me know if your time will not work for you. We will have half days Wednesay, Thursday, and Friday (10/31, 11/1, 11/2) to accommodate our conferences. I am excited to share our third grade MONTCAS scores and this Fall's NWEA scores.

RED RIBBON WEEK

October 23rd through October 26th is the official 2012 National Red Ribbon Week.

Red Ribbon Week was derived from the memory of a drug enforcement agent who lost his life while attempting to decrease illegal growing and selling of drugs. While his family awaited news of his whereabouts, they displayed or wore a red ribbon to offer hope for his safe return. Although he died in the line of duty, we continue to use the Red Ribbon symbol in October as a reminder of his important mission.

We invite you to join in Red Ribbon Week activities by participating in the following “theme days”. While school children will promote being drug and alcohol free, adults can promote saying no to illegal drugs and using tobacco and alcohol safely, responsibly and legally.

MONDAY, OCTOBER 22nd “No Drugs, No Alcohol…..No Sweat” – Wear sweats

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 23rd “Don’t Let Drugs “Tie” You Up – Wear a necktie

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 24TH: “Sock It To Drugs” – Wear crazy socks

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 25TH: “Drugs Stink” – Wear pink

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 26TH: “Team Up Against Drugs” – Wear something of
your favorite sports team

Walk to School Day

Our Walk to School Day was cancelled due to inclement weather. It has been rescheduled for October 12th. More details to come.

Just a reminder: students who need to cross 38th street on a daily basis should do so with the crosswalk, instead of on their own in the middle of the street.

Classroom Donations

Thank you for donating the items requested at Open House. I so appreciate your generosity!

Mid-Terms

Please look for your child's first mid-term report on Friday 9/28/12. I have included a signature line for you to fill out and return to school. Please note that some subjects have few grades and may result in lower scores at the moment. If you are concerned with a grade, please email or call me. Several students have missing work, which is a reason for some low scores on the report. As soon as the work is turned in, you will see a nice change in their grade.

Saturday Live

Please join us this Saturday for the annual Saturday Live event. The hours are 10-5. The Arrowhead basket auction will begin at noon. We have some fabulous baskets displayed in the foyer at school. Help support out technology program by bidding/purchasing a basket. Hope to see you there!

Spirit Day

We will have Spirit Days this year - $1 donation to our technology fund. Our first Spirit Day will be October 31 "Orange and Black Spirit Attack".

Saturday Live

We have chosen a "Think Pink" and "Sports" theme for our baskets this year. The pink items are coming in daily, but we only have two items for the sports basket. Please consider donating to this fundraiser to help raise money to stay right here at Arrowhead for technology. Our goal is to have all items collected by Open House to be prepared for Saturday live on September 29th.

Parent Open House/Power School

Please mark your calendars for Parent Open House night this Thursday, 9/20/12. A note with specific times will be in your child's Tuesday folder this week. You will also find the access information for you to launch the Power School site and see your student's academic progress/grades in their folders as well.

Scholastic Books

Book orders are due this Friday 9/7. Each online order will help us to get a FREE book for our classroom library. We are currently working on building our higher level library from 5.0 - 6.5.

Testing Time!

We have completed our S.T.A.R. test to get our beginning of the year reading level and zone. I am really pleased, and proud of the reading levels our students have accomplished. Students are asked to check out all three library books each week. I suggest one chapter book around their Independent Reading Level (IRL), one chapter book lower in their zone, and one book for pleasure. This will ensure that the students are getting an adequate amount of daily reading in their levels. We will keep one of the library books at school for daily SSR reading. The other books can be taken home to complete their nightly reading.

Students who have scored above 6.5 IRL are asked to read in the bottom or their zone up to 6.5. We want students to read age-appropriate materials. It's such a fine line to keep our top readers reading, but not over their maturity level.

NWEAs have been schedule for our class on Monday 9/10, Tuesday 9/11, and Thursday 9/13. We will begin testing at 8:30 am. Tests will include Reading, Math, and Language skills to get a baseline to start the year.

What Are the Social Sciences?

Students can find more information on the Social Sciences by visiting this online source provided by our Social Studies Alive curriculum.

Placement Tests

We have successfully worked through our first days of school practicing procedures and getting better acquainted with each other. We have also started placement testing for our new reading series, Lead 21. Students have put their log in codes in the front of their assignment planners. They can use the website to practice weekly skills introduced in the classroom.

We are also taking a 4-part math inventory that will be finished on Monday. This will help me to see where the students line up with our new common core standards.

As in the past, the S.T.A.R. test will be administered to find the student's independent and zone reading levels. Students should be reading a minimum of 30 minutes per night in their level. One passed A.R. test per week will continue to be the requirement in our classroom.

Our specialist schedules have been tweaked a bit to accommodate all grade levels in our building. We moved music back to 1:25 on the same days (M & W). Extended Studies will be on Tuesday mornings from 8:30-11 with Mrs. Hetland.

Please have your students pack a healthy snack every day and a water bottle for hydration. If possible, please have all supplies purchased and sent to school by Monday, August 27th.

We are off to a great start!
